Access Statement For The Mercury Bolton
The Mercury has 17 guest bedrooms, all of which are on the ground floor.
We have 5 single rooms, 5 double rooms, 5 twin rooms, one triple room and one family room (with a double bed and set of bunk beds). All rooms are en-suite.
We are approximately 400m from the M61 junction 5.
There is a bus stop across the road from the Mercury and there is a frequent bus service (540) to either Bolton or to Wigan.
The Bolton main train station is less than 4 miles away by car.
The Mercury is situated between two smaller railway stations; each being approximately 1.5 miles away:
- Westhoughton Railway Station
- Westhoughton rail station is the ideal starting point for a visit to Bolton and Wigan town centres or Manchester city centre. You can make these journeys directly from here.
- Daisy Hill Railway Station
- Trains take you into Manchester, or to Wigan. If you want to go to Bolton from here you have to change at Hindley North or Salford Crescent. For train times please call Traveline on 0871 200 22 33
There are a number of local taxi services that have both cars and mini buses. Contact numbers are available in hotel reception.

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities
There is free car parking for up to 50 cars in our car park that has a level tamac surface. There are 2 disabled bays immediately next to the main entrance. We are able to assist guests with luggage if this is required.
On arrival, we ask all guests to call at our reception desk in the foyer. Guests are required to complete our registration form and will then be shown to their rooms and our facilities are explained. Seating is provided in our entrance hall.
Main Entrance & Reception
The entire hotel is on the ground floor. The front door is locked from 11.30 pm until 7 am (9am Sat \ Sun). The outer door is a double door, total width 160cm, with a low ridge. There is a second double door into the foyer that is 144 cm wide.
Both our main bar and function rooms are on the ground floor. Within the main bar there is a raised section that has 3 steps to reach it. Removable access ramps are available on request to allow wheel chair users to enter the upper bar area.
The floor covering on the entrance hall, bars and corridors is short-pile fitted carpet.
There are public toilets in the reception area with 2 gents toilets, 2 ladies toilets and a disabled toilet. The disable toilet has a high seat to the toilet with a lower-able support rail. This toilet unit also has a baby changing station.
Evening meals are served our main bar.
There are a range of tables on upper and lower sections and we have chairs with and without arms. A child’s high chair is available if required.
Breakfast is served in our Function Room on the ground floor and is accessed through the main bar. The entry to both areas is level and the double door width is 144cm.
Menus may be provided in larger print by prior arrangement. Background music is played during meals.
Vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and all other diets can be catered for.
Laundry facilities are not available on the premises but there is a launderette within a 5 minute drive – The Washeteria – 71 Church Street, Westhoughton. Tel 01942 814 640
The nearest shopping facility is a Spar located in the Mercury Petrol station adjacent to the hotel. There are several other supermarkets within 1 mile of the hotel.
There are a number of nearby leisure facilities including Westhoughton Leisure Centre, 0.5 miles away, and the larger Horwich leisure Centre 5 miles away.
There is central heating throughout the hotel. The temperature of each guest bedroom is controlled by thermostatic controls on the radiators. The beds are made with all-season duvets. Each bedroom has a ‘hospitality tray’ with tea & coffee. In each room there is a hair dryer and a freeview TV with remote control . There is free WiFi available throughout the premises. Each room has storage space that consists of a wardrobe, chest of drawers and bedside cabinet.
Average bed-height is 60cm; average width of doorways (room entrance) is 70cm. En-suite doorways average width is 70cm; average WC height is 40cm; average height of wash basins is 78cm.
En-suite bathrooms include a bath with shower. The size of the bathrooms does not allow sufficient space to turn wheelchairs around.
The bedrooms are divided between front and back blocks. In general the rooms in the back block are slightly larger than those in the front block. The rooms in the front block are nearer to the reception and bar areas.
Grounds and Gardens
The hotel is surrounded to the front and side by a car park. There is a small, hedged border on the outside of the car park and we have hanging baskets along the front of the hotel. The rear of the hotel is for access only although parking can be arranged for surplus cars or larger vehicles if required.
We regret that pets, other than those used as trained companions by our disabled guests, cannot be brought into the hotel.
We are totally a non-smoking venue.
There are 2 fire extinguishers in each corridor, one in the reception area and one in each of the bar areas.
We are able to use the front, side and rear doors should evacuation be necessary. The fire alarm rings continuously if evacuation is needed. If you need assistance in this kind of emergency (eg hearing impairment) please let us know on arrival and we will ensure that you are evacuated safely.
A small fridge can be made available in the reception area for medication etc.
A selection of local information is available in the entrance hall.
There is a folder in each guest bedroom that provides information about the services offered and local attractions.
Further information about the Mercury routines and emergencies is displayed inside each bedroom and in the corridors.

We have recently carpeted and decorated all the bedrooms in the rear block and have refurbished the foyer. We have also resurfaced the car park and upgraded our heating system. We plan to refurbish all our front block bedrooms during 2010
